Plaxico Burress Can Now Feel Special

Plaxico Burress, who obviously doesn t have much in the way of brains to blow out, brought his gun into Manhattan and into the Latin Quarter because, he reportedly explained, he was carrying cash and jewelry. Sounds good in theory, but here is a question that no one has answered in the aftermath of the New York Giants receiver s arrest: What was Plaxico going to do if some young thug decided to grab one of his chains and run? Draw, like the Outlaw Josey Wales? Just, you know, let him have it?
Here is a guy who could not secure his gun and drink his wine at the same time. We re supposed to believe he is better off with a loaded weapon than without one? Did he honestly think he was ready to pull that gun and use it? Burress was in a VIP room, in a club equipped with metal detectors, accompanied by a bodyguard and a rather large teammate, linebacker Antonio Pierce.
Despite all that, Burress supposedly convinced some chump at the nightclub that he just had to hang on to his piece, that he didn t feel safe without it. And amazingly the chump gave him a pass, which ironically might be the last special favor Plax gets for a while.
In the last few days, there has been a lot of discussion about jocks and material tattoo their guns, and why so many athletes feel the need to arm themselves. These young men have money and nice cars and tattoo istanbul schedules that appear in the newspaper each day. Easy targets, in other words, so why shouldn t they do what they can to protect themselves?
Well, that s great, but shouldn t doing what they can include firearms training and learning the law and, even better, staying the hell out of the Latin Quarter? If you don t feel safe enough to walk into a place unarmed, it s time to find another place.
Here is the dirty little secret about guys and their guns. It is not really about protection, at least not in most cases and tattoo side effects certainly not in Burress case. Sadly, it s more of a fashion statement, no different from a tattoo or a nose ring or a black leather jacket. Something to round out his macho-guy ensemble for a big night on the town.
Was he ready to use his Glock on another person? Certainly not, but he sure was ready to show it off to another person or two or 10. It will come as no surprise if we learn later that the gun went off while he was showing his tablemates his new toy.
Burress has played in the NFL for nine years, but never has he served as a greater example for young athletes than when he shot a hole in his leg. We know many of these guys feel bulletproof, and here comes Plax to literally prove them wrong. You think they might think twice about packing the Glock next time they head out for the night? Look what happened to Plax. With one slip of the trigger he lost his job and his contract, and in all likelihood, his freedom will soon follow. It was one hell of costly fashion statement. Sarah Palin s got nothing on Plax.
The current poster in the New York City subway is bland and forgettable: 1 gun 3 Years, it reads, and, boy, you can just imagine all those young riders quaking in their Skechers as they heed Mayor Bloomberg s warning.
Soon there will be new posters for Bloomberg s anti-handgun campaign, you can be sure this one will capture the attention of every passerby. The mayor s new poster boy is a Super Bowl hero who is facing a mandatory 3 years in prison for one self-inflicted gunshot wound.
It would be an outrage if we didn t prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, said Bloomberg.
Oh, the irony. In the state of New York, fewer than 10 percent of defendants facing the same weapons charge as Burress actually do the mandatory minimum, but it looks like one thing won t change for good old Plax.
He s still going to get special treatment. Once again, he gets to go someplace just because he s Plaxico Burress. Only this time he doesn t get to bring his Glock. Let s hope he s as tough as he thinks he is.
