Local Woman Has Essay In Book For Military Families


In November, Stanley's essay, 'Gung Ho,' hit bookshelves as part of the book, A Cup of Comfort for Military Families: Stories that Celebrate Heroism on the Homefront. The essay shares how she and her family have coped with the loss of her nephew, who was killed in November, 2004, while serving in the military in Iraq.
'My daughter bought me A Cup of Comfort for Writers for Christmas last year,' she said. 'I had never read one of those before and had never entertained the idea to write or submit any essays. But when I read the call for submissions for military stories in the back of that book, the thought stuck in my head. Two days later, I realized I didn't have a choice. I had to write it for Lance.'
He was her sister Melanie's son.
Stanley, 51, lives in Cowan and is a resource development assistant at Ivy Tech Community College. She has four grown children and unterarm tattoos her son, Casey, was a year younger than Lance. In 2004, Casey and Lance, were both in the First Marine Division and involved in the push to Baghdad.
For the essay, Stanley explains how she and wrecking ball tattoo removal other family members got tattoos that said 'Gung Ho' in Lance's memory. Stanley's tattoo, ornament tattoo the only one she has, is in the middle of her lower back.
'Lance was as my son,' she said. 'He stayed overnight with Casey all the time, from the time he was a toddler to when he came home on post-deployment leave after Iraq. I couldn't have written the story about Lance without including the story on his tattoo because Lance personifies the 'gung ho' attitude that tattoo represents. It keeps us tied to Lance in an indescribable way.'
Stanley has submitted to other anthologies about hiking the Grand Canyon in 11 hours. She's written a novelreceived a scholarship to the Midwest Writers Workshop that was held in Muncie in July. She also attended a writing conference in California over the summer.
But the Cup of Comfort book holds significance for her.
They were to arrive in bookstores around Nov. 15, the day Lance went to heaven four years ago, she explained.
