Utah Night-time News War Heats Up
The local television news race in the 10 p.m. time slot has intensified, with second-place KUTV Channel 2 coming to within half a rating point of longtime leader KSL Channel 5.
According to preliminary Nielsen ratings for November -- known as one of the important 'sweeps' months in which advertising rates are calculated -- KSL had a rating of 11.6; KUTV, 11.1; KSTU Channel 13, 7.1; and KTVX Channel 4, 4.9.
It's the closest KSL and KUTV have been in the 10 p.m. ratings for November in at least six years, and it's the closest for any 'sweeps' month since May 2006 , when both stations were within one-tenth of one rating point.
The ratings refer to the percentage of Utah's 919,390 television households that are watching a particular program.
Much of the narrowing of the gap between KSL and KUTV can be attributed to NBC, the parent network for KSL, having weaker lead-ins, schmetterling tattoo or prime-time programs that lead into the news, according to KSL research director, toe ring tattoos Jenny Love. Currently, NBC has been in fourth place in the ratings.
Meanwhile, CBS, KUTV's parent network, anker tattoo has had stronger ratings this year with new fall winners such as 'The Mentalist.'
But KUTV general manageracting news director David Phillips said it's also because his station has been the news ratings leader for most of the other newscasts during the day, from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., excluding the noon newscastwhere it is No. 2.
